Watercraft: Hydrofoils

note.jpgHydrofoils are not eligible in the First Choice program.

A hydrofoil is a specialized type of boat that has a winglike structure (the hydrofoil) attached to the hull of the boat that raises all or part of the hull out of the water when the boat is moving forward, thus reducing drag.

At low speeds the hull sits in the water, and the hydrofoils are totally submerged in the water. As the boat’s speed increases, the hydrofoils create lift. At a certain speed, the lift produced by the hydrofoils equals the sum of the boat weight and the hull lifts out of the water.

Hydrofoil watercraft can be sail- or motor-powered.
