Numbers must be placed on the starboard side of the transom and in a hidden spot inside the boat. If the location on the stern is impractical, the HIN may be placed on the starboard side of the boat within one foot of the stern.
Each number must be carved, burned, stamped, embossed, molded, or otherwise permanently affixed to the boat in such a fashion that any alteration of the numbers will be obvious.
It is illegal to alter a boat’s HIN once it has left the place where it was built.
